Mentoring

Mentoring plays an important role in WGR's mission to advance and empower women. Opportunities for mentoring are provided throughout the year in our programming and activities. This includes:

  • Mentor Dinners – These dinners are held periodically and provide a social networking opportunity that brings women together to discuss what life is like in the government relations field. The Mentor Dinner provides an opportunity for our members to come together in a fun, open environment to talk about life happenings, either personal or professional. The dinners are limited to 18 participants, with two mentors who guide conversation, provide perspectives and share their own life experiences.

Instead of the typical cocktails and toothpicks, it’s an excellent opportunity to hold an actual conversation about the work we do. The format encourages us to shift perspective and appreciate how others are impacted by the policies and politics of the city.

  • Public Policy Leadership Programs – WGR leaders participate in key leadership programs of organizations such as the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN). PLEN is a national organization whose purpose is to prepare women for public policy leadership.

I wanted to thank you for delivering a phenomenal and moving speech. I am privileged to have met you. From meeting you and hearing your speech, I have now decided to change my career path to public policy or working within the government/nonprofit sector. I would like to extend my gratitude once again for the time that you have allotted to the PLEN participants. I thank you and look forward to seeing you in the future.

    — Mary Jessica Simon, Student, Spelman College & PLEN Seminar Participant

I can’t begin to say how much fun it was to be one of the featured presenters at the PLEN dinner last night. There were about 10 young women at each table with a WGR mentor assigned to each. This event was what we’ve been talking about for years – giving back by mentoring. What a great benefit of being a member of WGR.

    — Peggy Tighe, Former WGR President

  • “Virtual” Mentoring Information – Members have access to various mentoring resources on the WGR website including the WGR Membership Directory, and a Career Center that will be a one stop shop for members seeking government relations employment information.
