Inspired by a donation drive held by Rep. Grace Meng which highlighted “period poverty” and the impact of the unaddressed natural need of menstrual hygiene products, WGR’s PPD Committee is spearheading the 2nd Annual WGR-wide period product drive during the month of October.

Event Description

Background:

Low-income and homeless women often struggle to afford the supplies they need to manage their periods with dignity. Did you know that poor menstrual hygiene is linked to missing school and long-term health concerns, including maternal mortality? Lack of access to clean and ready supplies is a worldwide problem highlighted by the UN and included on the 17 Sustainable Development goals. While we may not be able to help everywhere, we can do more to support women in the DC area during their periods.

Regardless of income, women spend a significant amount of money on purchasing menstruation hygiene products each year. Beyond being cost-prohibitive, different populations of women and girls may face additional challenges accessing menstrual hygiene products. This is especially the case in times of economic hardship and disruption like the pandemic.
For further inspiration, check out this video by Nadya Okamoto (a young entrepreneur) which highlights her journey from awareness of the harsh realities of period poverty to her ultimate decision to start a non-profit entitled “PERIOD.”

How can you help:

This year, contributing is easy. Just use the Amazon Wishlist to contribute at least one package of period products—the preference is for pads—during the month of October. By using Amazon, products will be delivered directly to the Greater DC Diaper Bank.

To champion, support, and facilitate more donations, please share this information with all of your WGR friends, posting to your WGR community groups and social media. Send any questions to Alpha Lillstrom Cheng (alpha@lillstrom.com) or Jane Terry (jane.terry@nsc.org).
