On Thursday, January 23, 2020, WGR’s Energy, Environment, and Agriculture Task Force hosted a panel discussion on hemp regulations and states implementation. Experts from the federal, state and local level participated in a lively discussion moderated by CQ senior writer Ellyn Ferguson, about the state of the industry. Attendees heard from USDA Deputy Administrator Sonia Jimenez about the agency’s considerations around the interim final rule issued at the end of October 2019. Holly Bell, director of cannabis for the Florida State Agriculture Department, discussed the status of the state’s program as it implements USDA’s interim rule. Erica Stark, representing the National Hemp Association, discussed some of the challenges the industry and growers face in Pennsylvania. KathySzmuszkovicz, managing principal at Beveridge & Diamond, helped attendees understand the complexity of the issue as she outlined at least six federal agencies involved in regulating hemp. Around 30 attendees from government and industry attended the hour and a half discussion held at The Environmental Law Firm, Beveridge & Diamond.
