News & Press: Message from the President

A Message from WGR President Suzanne Swink

Wednesday, February 12, 2020
It's hard to believe that it's already February - I guess I have to stop saying "Happy New Year" to everyone? Maybe, maybe not. It may be a combination of way too much caffeine and my excitement for our plans for WGR this year, but I am at fever pitch - there are SO many great things coming this year at WGR!

Remember that not only is it an election year nationally, but it’s also WGR election season. If you are interested in running for the Board of Directors submit your Candidate Declaration Form no later than noon on Monday, February 10. We are also seeking interest forms for task force and committee leadership positions. I strongly encourage all eligible members to consider running – you can also nominate someone to run!

It’s Black History Month, and I want to encourage you to peruse this excellent piece by the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University and the Higher Heights Leadership Fund on the status of black women in U.S. politics. Key points include:
  • A record number of Black women currently serve in Congress, after a record number of women won nominations for the U.S. House in the 2018 election.
  • Between 2018 and 2019, Black women saw the largest gain in representation at the state legislative level since 1994. In 2019, a record number of Black women serve in state legislative office.
  • Black women made important and historic gains in the 2018 election, but the resulting changes in their political representation remain incremental.
As a reminder our DEI committee meets monthly. The next meeting is February 11 and the topic is the Impact of Gentrification on Homelessness in DC.

February also brings us Valentine’s Day and American Heart Month, so I’m thinking about love, perhaps in a different way. In this time of political uncertainty and partisanship, let’s look out for each other. Let’s think with our hearts. Let’s show care and consideration for others. And let’s practice self-care, too, giving ourselves and each other the support and space needed to make 2020 the best year it can be, whatever that may look like for you.

As always, please know you can reach out to me at anytime – for anything – at Looking forward to a great year of programming and finishing out the last six months of my term strong! Thank you for your continued trust and support.

p.s. If the winter weather makes you want to stay indoors, remember WGR is always at your fingertips through the WGR Community and upcoming webinars. Hope to see you at the Spring Reception on May 12!
