Our Public Sector Honoree and Distinguished Members were celebrated at the WGR Summer Leadership Celebration on June 17. Our Outstanding Member of Congress honorees will be awarded at the Congressional Reception in August.
Outstanding Member of Congress Honorees
Representative Susan Brooks (R-IN)
Rep. Brooks is a dedicated champion of empowering women and girls to succeed in STEM and educational opportunities. As Chair of the House Ethics Committee she oversees the investigations harassment and ethics complaints, she is a proven difference maker in areas such as harassment and discrimination. Her ability to see beyond politics and work for the greater good is clear through her work on mental health policy and growing public health crises like the opioid epidemic. Before Congress, her role as District Attorney and Deputy Mayor provided her practical, translatable leadership skills that have guided her time in Congress leading her to stand out. She has been a longtime supporter of WGR as an Emeritus member and engaging with WGR members at 20:1s and receptions.
Representative Brenda Lawrence (D-MI)
Rep. Lawrence is a passionate spokeswoman for women. She engages in conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion - introducing legislation that "improves the participation of women in the workforce.” She serves as a Vice Chairs of the Democratic Women's Working Group advocating for equal pay for equal work, access to health care, paid family and medical leave, affordable, quality child care, retirement security, combatting workplace harassment, and much more. Unafraid to be out in front, Rep. Lawrence aligns aspiration with action and delivers with results strength, grace, and precision. She has been a longtime supporter of WGR and most recently shared her time with members through a 20:1 event.
Public Sector Honoree
US Congress Office of Rep. Yvette Clarke, Chief of Staff
As a former Telecom, Tech & IP Task Force Co-Chair, Charlyn Stanberry has exemplified dedication to WGR through her leadership. She has created a dynamic team of engaged co-chairs that often-spent time supporting each other outside of WGR. She is an excellent mentor both to members of her staff and peers. Charlyn encourages others to excel and takes an active role in advocating for other women in government relations. Genuine in her authenticity, she generously shares her time and actively seeks to lend expertise in order enrich and empower others on an off the hill. Charlyn is a chief of staff to Rep. Yvette Clarke. Through her leadership, her office has enjoyed much success and a stellar reputation. Hard-working and tenacious, she has juggled volunteer responsibilities at multiple organizations with her obligations as LD, and now CoS, flawlessly. The infectious shadow she casts coupled with the guidance she provides demonstrates her commitment to the saying "paying it forward."
Distinguished Member Honorees
Women in Government, Executive Director
A WGR member for over 10 years, Lucy Gettman, has participated and volunteered in countless ways. As a Board Member, Vice President, a Task Force Co-Chair, Membership Committee Chair, Leadership Circle Member, WEN sponsor, State Relations Task Force Event sponsor, and mentor, and Lucy served as an Education Task Force Co-Chair. Lucy continues to advance and empower women through her day job as Executive Director of Women in Government and as an adjunct professor at American University's Women in Politics Institute teaching generations of college students to use their voice! Lucy continues to be an active member, attending events, supporting staff and mentoring WGR members.

Described by fellow volunteers as a “WGR workhorse” Channon has served as the Congressional Outreach Committee Chair, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Vice Chair, and former Transportation & Infrastructure Task Force Co-Chair. You can always count on Channon to come through when she says she will do something. She's passionate about the mission, WGR and the membership. While she is a well-known impressive leader within WGR, she is also a leader in her field balancing a demanding job with all her WGR responsibilities.
