WGR’s DEI Committee met for its monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 8th where the featured discussion topic centered around Cultural Identity and Expression. DEI Co-Vice Chair Larkin Willis led the meeting participants through an exercise where they
were asked to share a physical or digital artifact that represents a strong part of their culture and/or personal identity. Co-Vice Chair Willis noted that DEI work requires us to look outward-- at the larger world, society, and government relations field--
while also looking inward to recognize the unique gifts, insights, and even biases we each bring to the table.
Meeting participants shared their recipes, pictures, mementos, and “fun facts” that provided a unique space for everyone to shine a light
on an aspect of themselves that few (if any) may have previously known! Those sharing had the chance to connect to the deeper purpose behind their DEI work, and others had a chance to listen deeply to the stories and experiences of their peers on the
committee! The exercise was designed to foster further bonding and connection, and to highlight that everyone has a DEI Story! Following the activity, Co-Vice Chair Vieshnavi Rattehalli led a group discussion on where our stories crossed and diverged.
Although we are all individuals with our own unique experiences, there were recurring themes throughout this cultural “show and tell” that goes to show how, despite our differences, there is a shared humanity and common ground among us. Stay tuned for
2021: we identified family nomenclature, faith and interfaith friendship, and the culture of food as key themes that the DEI Committee should lean into and learn more about!
Next month is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and the
WGR DEI Committee meeting on Tuesday, October 13th will focus on women with disabilities in the Government Relations field. Please join us! You may register to participate in the meeting via Zoom here: https://www.wgr.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1318847&group=
