The event, taking place on July 20 to July 22, 2021, will include presentations by nationally recognized speakers, interactive workshop sessions and networking opportunities. Last year’s summit was a sold-out event with nearly 300 participants. Building on the impact of last year, the 2021 theme of Forward Together recognizes the ongoing DEI challenges that individuals and organizations face, with an emphasis on empowering and positioning participants to lead for the future. The three-day experience will feature “daily launch” remarks by a variety of scholars, first-person experts and trailblazers with additional implementation sessions and forums for open expression, exchanging ideas and networking. Each day will focus on different content areas: Diversity (Day One), Equity (Day Two) and Inclusion (Day Three). Gamble Hayden, Chair of WGR’s DEI Committee and Co-Chair of the Summit, says the design is built on feedback from last year’s successful event. “The overwhelming success of last year reinforced that the topic of DEI is a critical one within our field of government relations and public policy.” The agenda, Gamble notes, emphasizes not only expert information, but interactive sessions through which “possibility and purpose can be embraced, and empathy and a desire for connectedness can lead to more meaningful change.” Kate Shenk, President of WGR, notes that “WGR has really taken the lead in shining a light on both the problems and the opportunities surrounding DEI in the professional community that works in federal, state and local government-related activities. We are proud to be launching the second summit with our sponsors and members.” WGR’s second annual DEI Virtual Summit is designed as a “professional development opportunity that can open doors of thought and action in our public policy community,” notes Hayden. The target audience includes Government Relations professionals in lobbying, regulatory affairs, communications and related positions, Human Resource professionals; Diversity Officers, and anyone interested in how they can engage in DEI efforts.
