Emily Duncan

Director, Federal Government Relations, NationalGrid

Hometown: McLean, VA

Fun Fact: I seem to have a penchant for 19th century farm houses. I was raised in one, and have lived as an adult in two!

About Emily: I am a federal lobbyist trained as an attorney with experience in energy, tax, financial services, foreign ownership, trade, and environmental issues.

What attracted you to WGR and how has it helped you personally and professionally?
WGR is THE organization for women in our field. I first joined to network and find a new job and have stayed a member and gotten more involved as I've seen the value of the group grow as my career has evolved.

What was your original career path and how did you end up in Government Relations?
I am trained as an energy regulatory attorney, but wanted to get involved in government affairs. After significant networking (ask me about my ridiculous excel spreadsheet), I convinced the head of government affairs department at a trade association to hire me, and the rest is history.

What advice do you have for young women entering the field?
Stick with it. Always be looking for new skills and opportunities to further your career. Meet as many people as you can and develop relationships both personal and professional with those who inspire you.

What has been your most rewarding accomplishment/what are you most proud of?
Breaking into government relations with no legislative or government experience..
