<title>Women in Government Relations Launches 4th Annual  Diversity/Equity/Inclusion (DEI) Summit </title>

This year’s Summit, June 27 and 28, will be online with an optional in-person networking event.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri; color: #262626;">The keynote speaker on the first day is </span><b><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri; color: #262626;">Maria Cardona</span></b><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri; color: #262626;">, a well-known policy strategist at the Dewey Square Group who focuses on efforts with Latino communities. Grace Meng which highlighted “period poverty” and the impact of the unaddressed natural need of menstrual hygiene products, WGR’s Personal &amp; Professional Development Committee once again spearheaded the effort.<br /><br />15,602 individual products were donated to the <a href="https://greaterdcdiaperbank.org/" target="_blank">Greater DC Diaper Bank</a> surpassing last year's product total by nearly 2,000 products! less than a week away! Voting is at the core of free and fair elections and
protecting those exercising their constitutional right is integral for a
functional American democracy. WGR encourages all members to participate
in the voting process and let their voices be heard, and it is imperative that
all voters be free to do so without fear of harassment or violence.</strong></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: left;"><strong><br />Some reminders below related to voter rights and
protections</strong>:</span></p><ul><li class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: left;">If
polls close while you are waiting in line, you have the right to cast your
vote.</span></li><li class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: left;">If you make a mistake on your ballot, you may ask for a new one. </span></li><li class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: left;">If the
voter machines are down at your polling place, you have the right to ask for a
paper ballot.</span></li><li class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: left;">Intimidation
is a form of harassment and has no place in the voting process.</span></li><li class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: left;">Polling
places are a workplace for many volunteers. Workplace harassment is

She convened a Black-led, multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-generational coalition of organizations, activists, and community members who are working to ensure genuine public safety for all Long Island communities called LI United to Transform Policing &amp; Community Safety. She has been instrumental in advocating policy changes to Early Care and Learning, Raise The Age, Paid Family Leave Insurance, Bail Reform, and more. </em> </p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong><span style="color: #45095b;">Advocate on the Rise</span></strong></p><p> <strong>Samantha Sliney</strong>,<em> Department of the Air Force Women's Initiatives Team Co-Lead, United States Air Force</em></p><p> <em>Major Samantha “Sam” Sliney is a United States Air Force (USAF) judge advocate serving within Special Operations. In addition to her full-time duties, she co-leads the Department of the Air Force Women’s Initiative Team as an advocate changing policies to ensure the USAF has inclusive policies for women. Sam is a powerful advocate for servicewomen in the USAF and within the Department of Defense (DoD). She worked for 3 years to change the USAF and DoD policies regarding breastmilk shipping for servicewomen. The Secretary of Defense adopted her proposal in April 2022 and servicewomen are now reimbursed for shipping breastmilk when they travel. Sam not only secured this for servicewomen, but civilian women who are employees of the DoD. Competition is strong due to the level of commitment so many members give to this organization.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"> This year, we are celebrating two Distinguished Members, <strong>Lauren Colicelli</strong> and <strong>Shannon Patrick</strong>. <description><![CDATA[<p style="line-height: 13.65pt;">Established in 2015, in conjunction with WGR’s 40th anniversary, the <a href="https://www.wgr.org/page/About_Fellowship" target="_blank">Judy Schneider Fellowship</a> is named in gratitude and appreciation for the immense impact Judy Schneider has had on WGR and the thousands of women she has mentored, developed, and trained through her <a href="http://https://www.wgr.org/page/Direct_Connect" target="_blank">Direct Connect to Congress</a> education series, since 1985.</p><p style="line-height: 13.65pt;">The Fellowship provides real-life opportunities to build your professional and personal skillset as an emerging government relations professional. announces its third annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Summit to
raise awareness in the government affairs community on DEI issues. This year’s
event is set for July 26⁠–27 and
will include both virtual and in-person engagement to promote the theme, “<em><strong>Many Voices, Many Hands</strong></em>.”</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Keynote speakers, panels, and
interactive sessions will provide information and opportunities to create
personal as well as organizational goals to promote ownership, allyship, and
action around DEI issues affecting public policy and political discourse. “This
Summit is WGR’s way to find and explore commonality among peers in public
policy and work to promote a diverse, equitable and inclusive community,” noted
Executive Director, Jen Brydges. “The Summit’s focus is on reinvigorating
advocacy through ownership of the issues, deepening advocacy by honing allyship
skills, and enabling action to achieve necessary change for government
relations and our world.”</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Building on the success of previous WGR
DEI Summits, which each brought more than 300 people together, this year’s
program will enable government affairs and other professionals to examine
current issues as well as learn and develop ways to promote DEI. National
experts and leaders will present research, ideas, and concrete strategies. New
this year will be interactive breakout sessions call “action hours,” with
focused networking around goals and visions for DEI.</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"> 



WGR is a Washington-based organization
with national membership of more than 1200 professionals. WGR’s
vision for the field, and in turn, for the DEI Summit includes considering,
promoting, and sustaining a diverse, equitable, and inclusive government
relations field that welcomes and considers people of all races, sexual
orientations, socioeconomic status, religions, political affiliations, ages,
gender identities, disability status, and any other dimension of identity.
