WGR’s DEI Committee met on Tuesday, October 12th for its monthly meeting, where the discussion topic focused on Equity in K-12 Education. This topic was the final in a two-part series which kicked-off last month with the discussion on Equity in Post-Secondary Education. This month’s discussion was facilitated by DEI Committee Member Christina Nyquist.

Christina’s presentation brought focus to the challenges that many students (and their parents) encounter accessing high-quality educational support services to accommodate one or more learning disabilities. Christina highlighted the need for ongoing advocacy to ensure learners of all ages receive appropriate and timely diagnoses of learning disabilities, also acknowledging that advocacy does not end with the right diagnosis. For many families, gaining the accommodations that students so rightfully deserve can take years of persistent work in close coordination with health professionals, educators, and social workers. Christina bravely shared her own story of being the parent of a child with a learning disability, and how she continues to fight every day on behalf of her daughter. A number of committee members also shared their own personal stories, in addition to resources for those interested in learning more about the policies, practices, and advocacy needed to ensure students with learning disabilities thrive. Some of these are listed below:

A very special thank-you to Christina for facilitating this month’s discussion topic!
