If you’re considering launching an advocacy campaign, you likely already have a policy issue in mind.
So, what’s next?
Advance planning is vital to ensuring the long-term stability, impact, and success of your campaign. Here are three essential first steps to help you get your campaign off the ground.
1. Start with a goal.
In this first step, you will take your overarching issue and break it down into more manageable parts.
For instance, if your organization is advocating for environmental causes, it’s best to narrow your focus and resource allocation to smaller, more achievable goals – like solar funding or tax breaks for renewable energy companies.
This ensures your campaign doesn’t spread itself too thin by trying to solve multiple large-scale issues at once.
2. Craft your message.
After outlining your campaign goal, the next step is to craft your message. Strong communication and a compelling narrative can go a long way in influencing and inspiring the public for your cause – but you must also consider your organization’s overall
mission and stakeholders.
For your advocacy campaign to have impact, your message must align with both your target audience and your company’s goals and values.
It’s also critical to draft multiple versions to distribute through various channels and formats. Remember that email is only one channel at your disposal – other effective options include social media, phone calls, SMS, and peer-to-peer texting.
You want to be able to reach your target audience at the right place with the right message.
3. Identify your tech needs.
Posting your message online without the necessary strategy or tools won’t garner an audience. Public affairs professionals must have software that enables them to build and execute their campaign, monitor related news developments, engage with key contacts,
and track and analyze as many data points as possible to gauge the success of their efforts.
