Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Summit
WGR’s annual DEI Summit aims to provide government relations professionals an opportunity to enhance their understanding of what DEI is, a clearer sense of its value, as well as the need for DEI within the government relations field. This year's Summit programming will unpack the key concepts of Ownership, Allyship, and Action, and each day the Summit will offer insights on the actions attendees can take to acknowledge, recognize, and hold one another accountable for authentic DEI work. Government relations professionals will leave with practical tools to advance their education and ownership around DEI within their field of government relations. #DEISummit2022
OWNERSHIP - Intersectional Identities: Different Together
- Auseh Britt, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Capitol Canary
- Gabbey Nolan, Enterprise Account Executive, Capitol Canary
- Julie Sullivan Coriaty, Enterprise Account Executive, Capitol Canary
Objectives: Self-reflection: To create a space for participants to talk about their diverse experiences, how those experiences shape their identities (race, gender, sexuality, etc.) over time, and intersectionalities in a more personal way than they might in a regular professional setting. To highlight, in a practical way, that being authentic and proud of our identities leads to a deeper sense of ownership in the activities that we engage with every day, especially as we collaborate with co-workers.
Allyship: To provide an opportunity for participants to learn directly from each other's experiences, and to see first-hand the benefits of being acutely aware and welcoming of diverse perspectives. Learn that these are core functions of true allyship.
Discernment: To highlight how everyone may experience pain, ostracism, or discrimination, yet feel it within the context of different identities. Acknowledge that approaching a shared/common experience via different lenses allows for the opportunity of understanding, collaboration, and overall increased engagement.
